An example of short selling can be like this: Without having bought shares, you sell 1000 at 20 each in company X. For this you receive 20000. You do this expecting the price to fall - and a little later the price has now dropped to 18. So you buy the 1000 back again at 18 each, for which you have to pay 18000 - and thus making a profit of about 2000. ("About", because there are minor transaction / brokerage cost involved).
